Sylvester, Ga., September,22-
Honorable C. A. Alford, one of the wealthiest and most prominent men of this part of the state, died today at Waynesville, N. C., after a short illness of typhoid fever. He will be buried here Thursday.
Mr. Alford was a successful lumberman, but for the last few years turned his attention to railroading and banking principally, being president of the Gulf Line railroad and of the Sylvester Banking Company at the time of his death.
He represented the tenth district in the senate in 1887-88. He was born in Wake county, N. C. in 1850, and was a consistent member of the Baptist church at this place, a Royal Arch Mason, Knight of Pythias, and an Elk. He leaves three brothers and two sisters, Hon. W. L. H. Alford, of this county; A. J. Alford, of Apalachicola, Fl., and G. B. Alford, of Holly Springs, North Carolina, and Mrs. B. L. Jones and Mrs. Goodwin, of Raleigh, North Carolina. His immediate family consisted of nine children.
The Confederate service listed cannot be for Columbus A. Alford of Worth County, Georgia. He was born in 1850 in Wake County, NC. The C.A. Alford referenced as a Confederate soldier enlisted in 1862, aged 23 (therefore born about 1839). Columbus Alford would have only been about 12 years old in 1862, and was still living in N.C.
Thanks for making the correction to Columbus Alford's memorial. He is my wife's 2-great-grandfather.
