PLANE CRASH NEAR ALLIANCE FATAL FOR KANSAS FAMILY OF FIVE
Alliance, Neb. - A family of five was killed Thursday afternoon in the crash of their single-engine plane in a field about 20 miles west of Alliance.
Box Butte County Sheriff Fred Marsh identified the victims as:
EUGENE S. McCLAIN, 39, of Wichita, Kans., his wife
IMOGENE, and their three children,
LARRY, 16,
STEVE, 10, and
KAY, 14.
They were enroute to Greybull, Wyo., to visit relatives.
The plane crashed in a wheat field on the farm of Hilton Nielsen, who saw it fall and notified authorities here.
State Safety Patrolman Mike Frerichs, Alliance, said Mrs. McClain's father was waiting for the family at the Greybull airport when he received news of the crash.
The plane fell at about 12:20 p.m.
Don Brown, owner of Don's Air Service at Alliance, heard of the crash at about 12:30 and flew to the scene. The Alliance Rescue Unit was there when he landed.
Mr. Brown said there are no obstructions in the field but that there apparently was no chance for an attempted landing.
Mr. Brown, a pilot for 29 years, said it appeared that some pieces of the plane fell off before the crash. Some parts were as much as a mile away, he said.
Mr. Nielsen saw the plane falling in a spin but didn't see it hit the ground.
"A minute or so later I looked up in the west and saw the plane twirling. I watched it come down twirling, then it went down behind a hill and I didn't see the actual impact.
"I ran to the house and told my wife to call the police in Alliance.
"Then I drove to the top of the hill. I saw the plane there in the field, probably a quarter of a mile from me.
"I went back to the house to tell my wife where it was and she called the police again."
