Welsh Artist. The son of an engineer, he served as president of the British Royal Academy from 1928 until 1938. Primarily a portrait painter, among his noted works include two portraits of British Queen Mary (wife of King George V and grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II), "Confirmation" (1907), "Le Rosier" (1910), and "Girl with Pigtails" (1910). Among his awards and honors include the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. the Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, the Albert Medal, and the Netherlands Grand Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau. He died at the age of 82.
