U.S. Congressman. He moved with his father to Wayne County, Illinois, in 1850, learned the blacksmith trade and graduated from McKendree College, Lebanon in 1868. He studied law, graduated from the law department of the Indiana University at Bloomington in 1870, commenced law practice in Murphysboro, Illinois and was the master in chancery from 1880-1888. On March 4, 1889, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-first and to the nine succeeding Congresses. At the time of his death, he was the chairman for the Committee on Private Land Claims in the Fifty-ninth Congress.
