Eugene F. Woodard, 71, of Ashland passed away early Thursday morning, Oct. 17, 2013, at The Good Shepherd Home in Ashland surrounded by his wife and children.

Gene, as he was known by his family and friends, was born in Landover, Md., on Dec. 9, 1941, to Walter Martellus and Harriet Lynn (née Curran) Woodard. He grew up in Lake, Lorain and Ashland counties, graduating from Jeromesville High School in 1959. He did his undergraduate work at Ohio Northern University, where he received his bachelor's degree in biology in 1963. He then entered The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where he received his doctorate degree in 1967.

Following his graduation from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, Gene enlisted as a captain in the United States Army and received his basic training in San Antonio, Texas. He was stationed for two years at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Ga. Gene was known to have a wonderful sense of humor, which he used to help ease the fears of the young soldiers he saw who were being sent to Vietnam. He was discharged from the Army in September 1969.

Following his discharge from the Army, Gene returned to Columbus, where he started a new dentistry practice in Upper Arlington in 1969. While operating his practice, he also served as an instructor in crown and bridge for the OSU College of Dentistry.

In 1971, Gene moved to Ashland, where he bought the dentistry practice of Dr. Kinstle. He operated his practice at the Medical Arts Building on Claremont Avenue until 1975. He partnered with fellow Buckeyes Dr. Bill Manos and Dr. David Steury to design and build the Dental Arts Building. Gene continued to practice at this Katherine Avenue location until his retirement in 2007.

Gene was passionate about his hobbies. He enjoyed flying and received his pilot's license and later earned his instrument rating. He had a hangar at Ashland County Airport, where he kept his Piper Cherokee airplane. He had served as president of the Ashland County Airport Authority, and had flown his friend, Ohio Sen. Thomas VanMeter, to different cities in Ohio during Tom's gubernatorial campaign.

Gene enjoyed traveling with his family as the children were growing up. He delighted in planning family vacations, including numerous golf and skiing trips. This lifelong interest in travel resulted in Gene and his friend, Jim Heichel, purchasing the Fredo Travel Agency in the late 1980s.

Gene also was an avid golfer. He carded a hole in one on the 11th hole of Mohican Hills Golf Course on June 22, 1987. In the 1990s, he served as a marshal at Muirfield Village Golf Club, where he helped with the Memorial Tournament for five years. Gene also was an active follower and supporter of his son Greg's PGA golf career.

Another accomplishment in Gene's athletic career happened recently, when he was inducted into the Ashland County Sports Hall of Fame for playing on the 1957 Jeromesville High School six-man football team.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland. A 32nd degree Mason, Gene also was a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Columbus and Ashland County Shrine Club. He was a member of the Boys Dance Club, Married Couples Dance Club, Elks Lodge 1360, Country Club of Ashland, Ashland Young Men's Business Club and Clear Fork Ski Patrol. His professional memberships include the American Dental and Ohio Dental associations, Central Ohio Dental Society and Mansfield and Ashland Dental societies.

Most important in Gene's life was his family. He and Nila Jo Pace were married in Columbus on June 12, 1965. He is survived by his wife of 48 years and two children, Ann (Todd) Vermilya of Loudonville and Greg (Jennifer) Woodard of Loveland; two beloved grandchildren, Maria and Walter Vermilya; and his brother, Jerry Woodard of Fredricksburg, Texas.

There will be a celebration of Gene's life 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ashland, with the Rev. Sanford C. Mitchell officiating.

Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service in Jack's Place.

There will be a private family committal service at Ashland Cemetery, where the Ashland Veterans Honor Guard will conduct full military honors.
