During a mission flight over Germany for a
target to Bitterfeld, his bomber had a mid-air
collision with another B-17 in formation.

Lt. DeWahl was Killed In Action when his
plane was cut in half and crashed at
Kamberg, Germany. The other B-17, #43-38071
was able to land at Brustem, Belgium, without
any fatalities.

The airmen killed were:

1st Lt. Arthur Stern, pilot
Flt. Off. Clifton W Nippert, co-pilot
S/Sgt. James C Rivers
Sgt. George V Devlin
Sgt. Willard B Fay
Sgt. Jimmie R Heathman
Sgt. Edward C Holdren
Sgt. John B Terry, Jr
