Moses the chairmaker was well known in the Fitzroy area from the late 1830's until his death in 1874. Best remembered for his chairs, some of which are still in existance. Moses was also a contractor. Chairs must have been scarce and in great demand because, in a letter on 1861 to his relatives in Illinois, he wrote : "I have put Moses to the bench this winter. Samuel and Moses can put 48 chairs together a week. I am not able to paint as fast as they put them together. I am getting a good demand for chairs this winter. I brought a lode (sic) to a store about five miles off on Saturday evening and they were all gone before I left the store but 12. After all I make the demand is as much as I can attend to," In 1832, accompanied by his first wife, Moses journeyed to Maryland from Ireland but soon moved on to Leeds Co., Ontario where his wife died in 1834. He settled in Fitzroy sometime between 1834 and 1839, when he married Rebecca M. Landon, the daughter of John Landon and Betsy Phillips of Fitzroy.
