Opal M. Smith Brewer, 99, of Sayre, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2006 at the Sayre House Inc. Born July 20, 1907 in Reece, Kan., she was the daughter of the late Peter B. and Mary Ann Brashear Smith.

Opal graduated from Waverly High School in 1927, then the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1930. She was employed at the Blue Swan Mills as an industrial nurse from 1935-1960. She then went to work at the Robert Packer Hospital as a floor nurse from 1960-1970. Opal was a member of the Robert Packer Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, the Sayre Christian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir, and the Ambassador class. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the U.S. and Canada, and she enjoyed many summers at Brenchley's Lake with her family.

Opal was predeceased by: her husband, Eberlin L. Brewer in 1989; a brother, Carl B. Smith in 1994; and a sister, Florence Sperry, in 1982.

She is survived by: daughters Patricia A. Lloyd of Sayre, Kathleen J. and Ernest Landry of Portsmouth, N.H., and Mary Lon Covert of Indianapolis, Ind.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Friends and family may call Monday, November 13, 2006 at the Jay E. Lowery Funeral Home Inc., 225 S. Main St., Athens, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at the Sayre Christian Church, Keystone Ave., Sayre, with Rev. James Donahoo, her pastor, officiating. Burial will e in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens.

Memorial donations may be made in her name to the Sayre Christian Church 427 S. Keystone Ave., Sayre, PA 18840.
