Apollos is the first permanent settler recorded residing in North Amherst(now Cheektowaga since 1839)NY. Purchased his land on Dec 6, 1808 and moved his family from Buffalo 8 miles via oxcart to Amherst (now Cheektowaga)in June of 1811. Per the Cheektowaga Cavalcade Centennial booklet: "Apollos Hitchcock lived until 1824." (headstone reads 1822)
At a very early age, he took charge of his father's business, farm & tavern. He was also a surveyor, taking him into many different sections and states of the country. After he married, he went into business in Suffield, CT and then went to Charleston, NC persuing indigo. He started out for Europe with a cargo of indigo when it was shipwrecked and he lost the entire shipment. Later he spent three years in foreign countries and eventually came to New York in 1805. He moved to Buffalo in 1808 and established his business on the corner of Main and Erie Streets. He purchased his farmland 8 miles east of Buffalo in the town of Amherst (now Cheektowaga) in 1809 from the Holland Land Company. He then constructed a log house on the creek flats of what is now Borden Road. He moved his entire family and belongings from the city of Buffalo on an ox-drawn sled/wagon to their new home in June of 1811, becoming the first recorded permanent settler. He later built a new frame house near he south end of what is now Dick Road (Williamsville Rd./ Whiskey Road)at Broadway St. Apollos built the first sawmill, gristmill, and distillery in the town. He was an Indian Agent for the Buffalo Creek Indian Reservation and used his distillery for the purpose of converting the Indian's surplus corn into liquor.

Per Cheektowaga Cavalcade/Centennial booklet "Apollos lived until 1824.(1822?)He was interred in the family plot on their own lands(Home cemetery), but later the remains of all the family were exhumed and removed to the Rural Cemetery at Lancaster. The old grave gave up no material remains except a metal plate with a masonic emblem."
The town of Cheektowaga Historical Museum has a permanent exhibit displaying his family's life. The several business ledger books from both him & his father's Connecticut transactions in the 1700 & 1800's are stored at the town's Archives & Record Center.
