Carita was the daughter of Brig.Gen. John Morrow Hedrick and Matilda Caroline (Haines) Hedrick.

On 20 Jun 1894 she married William Fleming "Will" McCarroll, who died in 1907.

With the exception of a few years in Ames, Mrs. McCarroll lived in Ottumwa until 1949 when she moved to Ohio to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Thomas Keefe.

Survivors at the time of her passing were son, John M. McCarroll, Wickenberg,AZ; daughters, Katherine (Mrs. John L. Evans),Storm Lake,IA; Mary (Mrs.Keefe); Carita, (Mrs. Burton Joseph),Des Moines; Dorothy, (Mrs. Clifford "Duff" Sadler),Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren.

She was the last of the family of General Hedrick, a many- times-wounded Union Civil War officer; a participant in the Lincoln Assassination Conspirators Trial proceedings; civic leader; postmaster, and "Ottumwa Courier" editor.
