Archie James Paro, 60, of the Crowner Hotel, retired New York Central railroad engineman, died at 8:15p.m on Sunday, December 23, 1945, in the Mercy Hospital, where he had been a patient since December 18th. Death was caused by a kidney ailment.
Mr. Paro, who had resided with his son, Roy S. Paro, 619 Academy street, had been in declining health for about two years. Funeral services were held Thursday morning at 8:30 a.m. from the Cummings Funeral home and at 9 a.m. in the Church of the Holy Family. Burial was made in North Watertown cemetery. Friends were able to call at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 27th, afternoon and evening.
Besides his son, Roy S. Paro, he was survived by a daughter, Mrs. Luther F. (Rita E.) Bliven, Fulton; two sisters, Mrs. William (Ida) Bonner, Ogdensburg, and Mrs. Mabel Brown, Ottawa, Ontario, and three grandchildren, Thomas D. and Patricia A. Paro, city, and Francis B. Bliven, Fulton.
Mr. Paro was a member of the Railroad Brotherhood of Locomotive Enginemen and of Watertown Aerie, No. 782, Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He was born May 5, 1885 at Canton, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Brabant. His parents were separated and divorced during his early life and he adopted his mother's maiden name, Paro. She was later married to a Mr. Albert Henderson. Mr. Paro resided in Watertown, NY most of his life, coming from Canton, and during the greater part of his life was employed by the New York Central railroad. He began his railroad service as a locomotive fireman on December 7, 1906. Later, he was employed in various other capacities including carman, hostler, blacksmith and finally engineman. His service was continuous from December 20, 1912 until May 30 of this year, at which time he retired owing to physical disability and was pensioned June 1. At that time, he was a yard engineman in Watertown.
Mr. Paro married Miss Nellie Helena Singleton, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John J. Singleton and niece of the late Chief of Police Edward J. Singleton of this city, on October 28, 1906 in Watertown. She died here March 1, 1944 at the age of 53 years.
