Corporal Catlin was a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in North Korea on December 2, 1950 and died while a prisoner on February 28, 1951 during the Death March to Kangge at the village of Uisa-ri known as Little Death Valley.

His remains were not identified until April 16, 2012. He was buried in his hometown of Lockney, Texas, on May 19, 2012.
