Daniel C. Ashby, 60, of Centerville, Iowa, died of disease in Alton, Illinois while serving as a Private in the United States Army during the Civil War. He enlisted on September 11, 1862 and mustered into I company of the Iowa 37th Infantry. His widow, Nancy Ashby, applied for a pension on November 30, 1863.
