James lists his parents as being born in Germany in the 1900 and 1910 Census.

He served in the Civil War Union Side with:

It appears that James may have been living with Samuel and Eliza Gibson in Auglaize, Camden, Missouri, in 1860.

James married Susan Margaret Hinshaw in 1864 in Missouri.

Black Oak Point, Stark Twnship, Hickory County, Missouri was his home in 1870. He was working as a farmer. His wife, Susan, Cornelius and James were living with him.

By 1880, James had moved his family to Colorado City (now Colorado Springs), El Paso, Colorado. He was working as a Teamster. Susan, Cornelius, James, Elizabeth, Columbus and Andrew are in the home.

Applied for Invalid Class Pension (Application 446.408, Certificate #814767) in Colorado, April 15, 1882.

His son, Columbus, died from typhoid pneumonia in 1884.

In 1885, he was hauling stone, Susan was keeping house, Cornelius and James were working as laborers, while Elizabeth and Andrew were at home. He had been unemployed 5 months and Cornelius had been unemployed 8 months.

Andrew passed away around 1897.

They celebrate 34 years of marriage in 1900. Their remaining three children have left home. They own their home free. James is a laborer and was unemployed 2 months.

Living at 1013 Lincoln Ave., Colorado Springs Ward 4, El Paso, Colorado, USA in 1910, their son, James, has returned home, divorced and working odd jobs. James is also a laborer doing odd jobs. Susan is busy keeping house.

James' journey in life ends September 14, 1914.

Widow Pension applied on September 25, 1914 (Application 1034.55, Certificate #785051) in Colorado.
