Slain Child Honored With Special Marker

More than 100 persons gathered in a corner of Forest Park Cemetery Tuesday afternoon as a small tombstone marking the grave of Melissa Reeves was dedicated.

The crowd included county, city and law enforcement officials, adoptive and foster parents, and regional as well as local child welfare officials.

A guitarist sang and played "Jesus Loves Me" and some of the children who accompanied their parents to the Greenville cemetery joined in the familiar song. A minister and an attorney offered opening and closing prayers and Child Welfare Supervisor Marjorie Moore, in tears, thanked the people for showing their concern.

Two-month-old Melissa was buried in the spot 2 1/2 years ago after her lifeless body was brought to the emergency room of Citizens General Hospital and left there by her parents.

Her father was later arrested, convicted and sentenced to 99 years for her death.

The marker dedication comes during Child Abuse Prevention Month and Hunt County Child Welfare Advisory Board members took the opportunity to recognize people in the community who had played a part in the investigation and prosecution.

Special certificates also were presented to those who had volunteered their services to see that Melissa had a proper burial - and now, a headstone to mark her grave.

Included were Greenville Police Department Lt. James Fortenberry who headed the investigation that led to the identification and capture of Melissa's father, Mark Lynn Reeves, and to Hunt County District Attorney Duncan Thomas who prosecuted the case.

Certificates also went to D.E. Narramore of Den-Co Memorial and his employees who supplemented contributions to provide a larger marker than the one originally ordered; to Newman and Charla Peters of Peters Funeral Home who provided the (See MARKER, Page A-3)
