Charity Hinman, daughter of Philo Hinman and Mary Coe, apparently was born at Derby, New Haven Co., Connecticut, but the birth date appearing in the Derby record (30 October 1783) does not match that calculated from Charity's death date and age at death from her monument. Charity married Thomas Cowan on 8 April 1806. Charity and Thomas lived in the Town of Scipio in the vicinity of present-day Black Street and Mosher Road. They had six children: Mary Ann, William, John Wesley, George Y., Nancy Cynthia, and Thomas H. Cowan.
