Anchorage resident Chester Butch Smith, 69, died July 15, 1998, at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A memorial service was held at Witzleben's Bragaw Chapel with Bruce Haas of American Legion Post No. 1 officiating. Burial with full military honors followed at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. A wake then followed at American Legion Post No. 1, 804 W. Fireweed Lane.

Mr. Smith was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Dudley, Idaho. He served in the U.S. Marines from Dec. 11, 1944, to June 29, 1947. A World War II veteran, he served as a corporal in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Smith moved to Anchorage in 1962 and owned Anchorage Automotive from 1967 until 1981, when he took a job with Crawford and Co. as an insurance adjuster. He retired in 1996. Mr. Smith was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9981, Amvets Post No. 49, American Legion Post No. 1, and Moose Lodge No. 139. His family said: ''He was a very loving husband and father.''

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Delores Smith, son, Steven Smith, son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathryn Smith, all of Anchorage; daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and James Garner of Edgar Springs, Mo.; two brothers, Ray Smith of Post Falls, Idaho, and Art Smith of Spokane, Wash.; and five grandchildren. The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to American Legion Post No. 1, 804 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage 99503.
