TRIBUNE OBITUARY

Chesley D. "Tone" Smith, 54, 120 South Hill, World War I veteran, and resident of Bourbon County all of his life died last night at 7:10 at the Burke Street Mercy hospital. He had been in failing health for some time.

A son of John C. and Josephine Humphreys Smith, the deceased was born in Drywood March 9, 1899. He received his education in the Godfrey district school, and was first married to Mattie Belle Harless who died Feb. 17, 1944. His second marriage was to Margaret Libby here June 15, 1946.

He is survived by his widow, one daughter by his first marriage, Mrs. Harold Mary Lavon Marchant, of Las Cruces N.M., one son, Farrell Eugene Smith and one stepdaughter, Linda Lou Brooking, of the home. There are three brothers, Wesley (Buck) Smith, Clark Smith, and Ivan Smith, all of Fort Scott.

He was a member of the VFW. He enlisted in Co. "G" in this city April 5, 1917. He served in the St. Mihiel offensive and participated in Meuse-Argonne Wesling Gerardiner engagement. He was wounded in battle Sept. 28, 1918 and discharged from service May 10, 1919. He was a member of the United Brethren Church.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Cheney Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the National Cemetery. The body is at the chapel.
