J. Paul Stoll, 86, a resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., since May 1968, died Oct. 12, 2013, in Tucson, Ariz.

He will be entombed in the Abbey of the Angels Mausoleum at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Colorado Springs, Colo., on Oct. 18, 2013, next to his wife of 54 years, Frances E. Stoll. No services are planned.

In June 1931, the family moved from Denver, Colo., to Liberal, Kan., where Paul's father was employed as manager of the first self-service (today we call them supermarkets) Piggly Wiggly grocery store in that part of the country. The family returned to Denver in 1932, and Paul started school in North Denver. In 1937 the family moved to Colorado Springs. With some interruptions, Paul graduated from Colorado Springs High School in 1946.

In 1948 Paul was working at a Miller's Super Market in Denver when he enlisted in the US Army. After basic training at Fort Ord, Calif., he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division, serving as part of the U.S. Army of Occupation in Berlin, Germany. Paul arrived in Berlin aboard one of the airplanes involved in the Berlin Airlift.

Injured in an accident, Paul spent several months at the Army Hospital in Berlin and was sent to the U.S. Army Reconditioning Center at Garmisch, Germany. While recovering in Garmisch, Paul met Frances. Returning to duty in Berlin in 1950, Paul transferred to AFN Company and became a radio announcer and news director at the American Forces Network station in Berlin.

Paul and Frances were married in Berlin, March 6, 1952. Staff Sergeant and Mrs. Paul Stoll returned to the USA in September 1952.

Discharged from the Army at Camp Carson, Colo., Paul went to work as an announcer at KRDO radio and TV in Colorado Springs. He also worked part time for radio station KVOR and was an announcer for Alexander Film Company. In 1955 he went back to work for the Army as a civilian in the radio/TV section of the Fort Carson Public Affairs Office and became the post public affairs officer.

In February 1963 the family transferred to Heidelberg, Germany. Paul worked in the Public Affairs Office at Headquarters, U.S. Army, Europe. In May 1964 the Stoll family moved to Berlin. Paul was chief of public information in the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Commander, Berlin. Paul and family came to Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista in May 1968. He worked in the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Army Strategic Communications Command until his retirement.

Paul and Frances travelled frequently to Germany and around the United States, visiting family and friends. He enjoyed photography and more recently videography and genealogy. He also worked hard on his flowers and landscaping at their Sierra Vista home. Of course, he most enjoyed spending time with his extended family.

Surviving Paul is Linda Stoll of Colorado Springs; Mark Stoll, Kyle Stoll, and Kellie Stoll of Sierra Vista; Karen George, Tim George, Christina Pacheco, Josh Pacheco, and Sam Pacheco of Aurora, Colo.; and Meghan George of Portland, Ore. Also surviving is a brother, Donald and Maryann Stoll of Ruther Glen, Va.; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
