Verla Elizabeth Berg, 104, died Wednesday, November 10, 2010, at Pinecrest Manor Home in Mt. Morris, Illinois.

Verla was born August 10, 1906 in Stockton, Il, the daughter of Henry and Sadie (Bechtold) Berg. She attended elementary and her first year of High School in Stockton, before going to Freeport High School where she graduated from. Upon graduation she attended summer school two years in DeKalb, then she attended Greenville College in Greenville, Ill, graduating in 1930.

Later Ms. Berg attended the University of Illinois graduating in 1940 with a B.S. degree and a Masters degree in 1949. Ms. Bergs first teaching position was for all grades in a one-room schoolhouse at Heiter School west of Freeport. She also taught in a one-room school on route 20. She taught third grade in Shabbona, Momence, and Wheaton, Illinois. Later she transferred to Junior High as head of the Social Studies Department in Wheaton.

Ms. Berg loved children and teaching. She taught third grade in Elgin at Sheridan, Lincoln, and Channing schools for 15 years. After taking some time off to care for her aging mother she began to teach again and taught in all the public and three parochial schools in Freeport. Even after retirement she helped teacher friends and neighboring children as much as she could.

Everyone who knew her knew her love of animals, especially cats. She was an ardent supporter of the S.PC.A. and other Humane Societies.

Ms. Berg loved music and was a member of many colleges choirs and other musical groups. Gardening was her favorite hobby. Ms. Berg was a member of the Nazarene Church in Stockton but in her later years attended First Baptist Church in Freeport.

Survivors include two nieces; Carol (Bob) Krehbiel of King City, CA, Susan Derr, Big Sur, CA, two great nephews; Jason Derr, Rob Krehbiel and two great nieces; Mirah Tellez and Karen Serritelli.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, LaVern, her sister, Lucille Becker, and long time friend and companion, Walter Mooney.

Services will be Friday 11:00 A.M. at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Burial is at Oakland Cemetery.
