Funeral services for Ethel Lorraine Kemp Brownlee were held in Helen Galloway's Memorial Chapel of Chisholm Galloway Home for Funerals, 808 Bladen Street, Beaufort, South Carolina 29902, burial was in the Baha'i Cemetery on St. Helena Island, SC.

Ethel Lorraine Kemp was born May 3, 1936 in New York City to the late Clinton and Ethel Kemp. She lived in New York City for over 60 years and over the last 7 years was a resident of Beaufort, South Carolina. She died Sunday, February 24, 2013 in Savannah, Georgia. Ethel was educated in the public schools of New York City. She was an avid reader and was self-taught in many different topics. She was employed in many capacities, lastly being at H.W Wilson Publishing Company in the Bronx, New York from where she retired.

She met the love of her life, Benjamin Brownlee and on February 18th, 1979, they married and together they raised their blended family.

Ethel was a devoted member of the Baha'i Faith all of her life. She had been taught The Faith by her grandmother, Lorraine Kemp, who was one of the early African American Baha'i in New York City. Ethel served The Faith in many capacities, whether it was as a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly of Beaufort County, a teacher of children at Baha'i Sunday School, or opening her home to anyone in need of a helping hand. She was progressive in her thinking and generous in her spirit.

Ethel had a profound love for reading and the arts. She loved to draw and to travel and experience new people and places. She never met a stranger. She could engage in conversation with anyone. Ethel, even became an entrepreneur late in life, inspiring, influencing and encouraging a whole new set of people.

Ethel Brownlee is survived by her sons Philip Maldonado, Laurence (Elizabeth) Manns both of New York City and Lawrence Maldonado of Beaufort SC, sister, Lillian Neil of New York City, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Benjamin Brownlee, daughter Virginia Maldonado, son Dennis Hicks, and four brothers, Vernon, Clinton, William and Robert.

Ethel lived a good life. She was valiant to the end. She will be missed by many and was loved by all.
