Life Legacy

Otto Senft age, 81, of Tuscon Arizona, and formerly of Monticello, died Friday, January 30, 2004, at St. Marys Hospital, Tucson, Arizona following a brief illness.Memorial services will be held 11:00 Saturday morning, February 7, 2004 at the Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Monticello. Friends may register 1 hr before service time at the church. A luncheon gathering will follow the service. Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello is assisting Ottos family. Condolences may be left at goettschonline.com. Otto was born in Ft. Morgan, Colorado, the fourth of five children, June 15, 1922. He attended Hazen High School in Hazen, North Dakota. After receiving a B. A. degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, he attended Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque receiving his Master of Divinity degree in 1946. His first ministry was in Elvaton, Maryland from 1946-1948 where he served as an Interim pastor. From 1948 1950 he served Grace Lutheran Church in Washington D.C. as an associate pastor. Otto attended George Washington Medical School in Washington D.C. from 1950-1954 earning an M.D. degree in Family Practice and Aviation Medicine. The Air Force accepted him as a Flight Surgeon from 1955 1958 where he did extensive research on pilots in long endurance flights. He opened his private practice of medicine in 1958 in Monticello, Iowa where he cared for patients the next thirty years. He was honored as one of the original founding members of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He took a semi-retired position in family practice in La Fayette, Georgia, from 1985 1987. The happiest days of practicing medicine culminated working for United Airlines as a Flight Surgeon at the age of 65 from 1989 1995 when he could mix his love of medicine and aviation. His retirement years were filled with helping to build the Lancair IV-P and flying around the country. Otto was married to Lois Burrack in 1948 and had three children: Susan Senft and Mark Senft of Kona, Hawaii, and Tom Senft of Katy, Texas. Lois died in 1980. Otto married Mary Thuman in 1982 automatically adding two children, Jennifer Roling of Broomfield, Colorado, and Amy Roling of Longmont, Colorado. There are two grandchildren Alexis Senft, daughter of Tom, and Nikolas Senft, son of Mark. Otto has one surviving sister, Lydia Beckman, of Omaha, Nebraska.
