Peder P. Graven, Jr. of "The Graven-Wilcox Shoe Men," Menomonie, one of the most important mercantile concerns of the city, was born in Norway, May 1, 1857, son of Peder P. and Sigrid (Overby) Graven. The family, who were farmers, came to America in 1868, settling at Avoca, Iowa County, which place they made their home for ten years. In 1878 they came to Dunn County, and from that time until their death resided in Downsville.

Peter P. Graven worked 3 years in the lumber yards and mills at Downsville, after which he was transferred to Menomonie and for 8 years was manager of a hardware store here. On April 16, 1891, he formed a co-partnership with J. C. Wilcox and the established the Graven-Wilcox Shoe Store. The concern carries the best and most popular brands of shoes and operates a large repair department, employing two or three men. This co-partnership has now lasted 33 years and is one of the oldest in the state.

On Oct. 13, 1887, he was married in Duluth, Minn., to Ragna Wollan, native of Norway. Mr. and Mrs. Graven have three children, Paul, Anker and Leif. Mr. Graven is a member of the Rotary Club and also of the Menomonie Commercial Club and the Menomonie Improvement Association.
