Catherine's (2nd) husband, Albert Jaffrey Cay, owned a ranch 'Thunder Ridge', near Cranbrook, British Columbia, Canada. In May 1914, she was returning to England to visit her mother at Bentley, near Bromsgrove, England - the latter reportedly ill. She sailed aboard the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company's ocean liner 'Empress of Ireland' from Quebec to Liverpool. The liner sank in the St Lawrence River following a collision with the Norwegian collier SS Storstad near the village of St Luce, Quebec - the greatest maritime disaster in Canadian history. Of the 1477 people aboard the liner, 1012 died - including Catherine. Her body was never recovered.
