A Detroit, Michigan, native, Renee attended Michigan State University, where she studied economics from 1973-77. It was at MSU that she met Larry. The couple were married in 1978. She worked for the Michigan Department of Human Services for more than 26 years as a social worker and a manager for the Family Independence Agency. She worked for the agency's offices in Warren, Pontiac, Mount Clemens and Madison Heights. A longtime ballroom dancer, she started taking lessons in the 1980s. In the past few years, she began teaching ballroom dancing. She knew how to make anyone look good out on the dance floor. She learned Russian to bridge the communication gap with a Russian family she was helping to settle in Metro Detroit. And she studied sign language to help a family whose members were deaf. Her clients considered her a guardian angel. A resident of Sterling Heights, she died from ovarian cancer at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Survivors include her husbnd; mother, Leontine Hoffman; and a sister, Helga Chapp.
