Charles Edwin Read Jr. passed away peacefully Sept. 30, 2005, surrounded by his children and grandchildren. Chuck, as he was known to many, was born to Charles E. and Ella Halsey Read on May 18, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo. When he was six months old he moved with his family to Hailey, Idaho. He graduated from Hailey High School in 1935, and worked for the Sun Valley Company when the resort was developed in 1936.

Chuck moved to Boise in 1938, attending Link's School of Business where he met and married Maxine Beatrice Perkins on Feb. 21, 1942.

In 1946, Chuck's uncle, Eltinge Read, asked him to manage a general store in Owyhee. Instead of the planned two-year store assignment, he moved in 1952 to a second company store in Mountain City, where he lived and operated Read's Golden Rule Store until late 2004, having never understood the concept of retirement. Ill health brought him to Boise where he spent his last year with his oldest daughter, Carol, and her husband, Jerry Davis.

Chuck was a very principled man with great wit and sense of humor. He was a devoted man of faith and unwaveringly followed his convictions. He loved his family and especially any family gatherings. He loved fishing and hunting and generally being outdoors.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 55 years, Maxine; a brother, Eltinge, who was killed in World War II; and his sister, Doris Lemon, who passed away last month. He is survived by his other daughters, Charlene and Norma Jean; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and some very special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be on Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Summers Funeral Home on Ustick Road in Meridian, Idaho, followed by a graveside memorial service at Canyon Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, Idaho.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to North Valley Baptist Church, 1546 Prestwick Way, Eagle, ID 83616; Boise Samaritan Village, 3115 Sycamore Street, Boise, ID 83703; or a charity of the donor's choosing.
