Herbert Willis Enfield Sr.
May 5, 1911 -- May 12, 2002
At age 91, Herbert Willis Enfield Sr., succumbed to congestive heart failure in Jefferson General Hospital, Port Townsend.
He was born in Port Hadlock to George Washington and Mary Martha (Eldridge) Enfield. He graduated from Port Townsend High School and followed his father as a farmer, after being given starter land.
At age 33, while continuing to maintain his small farm, Mr. Enfield went to work for Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill (now known as Port Townsend Paper Corp.).
On Dec. 2, 1944, he married Crystal Stanton in Port Townsend. Their family continued to grow, with four sons and two daughters joining her son from a previous marriage.
Mr. Enfield was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying baseball, in which he played as catcher in his younger years.
He was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge, where he enjoyed singing and dancing, and belonged to a Baptist church.
In addition to his wife and sons Herbert W. Jr. and Warren G., all of Port Townsend, Mr. Enfield's survivors include sons Don of Longview, Charles F. of Hilo, Hawaii and Edwin C. Stanton of Mount Vernon; daughters Martha Mae Murdock of Kent and Carol A. Enfield of Port Hadlock; sister Mildred G. Flynn; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sister Francel Fairbrother and brothers George ``Putt,'' Victor, Horace ``Hoddie,'' Jack W., and Lloyd Enfield.
Services: Thursday, May 23, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, where on Friday, May 24, at 1 p.m., the funeral will follow. Pastor Skip Cadorette will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., Port Townsend.
