W.A. Amburn

TULIA (Special) - Services for W.A. "Dub" Amburn, 84, of Tulia will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport officiating.

Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens in Plainview under direction of Wallace Funeral Home of Tulia.

Amburn died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 1998, in Heritage Home in Plainview.

He was born April 29, 1914, in Floydada. He sold insurance in Plainview, and he worked for newspapers in Floydada, Childress and Dumas. He was owner and editor of the Briscoe County News, and he served as managing editor of a newspaper in Lovington, N.M.

He moved to Tulia and started Amburn's Stationery. He later expanded and became partners with T.A. Hayhurst in A&H Printing. He purchased radio station KTUE, where he hosted the Trading Post Show for 17 years. He married Doris Stacy on Dec. 2, 1945. He later was a partner in Jerre's Jewelry. He and his wife owned Amburn's Fashions and Gifts in Tulia for more than 40 years. He was a volunteer in jail, hospital and prison ministries, and he participated in overseas mission trips. He served as chaplain of the Tulia Correctional Facility. He was active in the Toastmasters Club and Tulia Kiwanis Club.

He was a member of the Tulia Chamber of Commerce, and he was named Man of the Year in 1969. He was a member of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce and First Baptist Church in Tulia. He taught Sunday school. He was the superintendent of the College Department at First Baptist Church in Plainview.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Doris Lindeman of Plainview; a son, Kenneth Amburn of Irving; a sister, Tommie Carter of Amarillo; a brother, Foster Amburn of Canyon; three grandchildren; and 10 great-granddaughters.
