Lovinia Rosanna Chase was born on a farm near Ithaca, N. Y., July 9, 1847. She was a twin, but her twin brother died at the age of thirteen years. Her education was completed in Cortland Academy. At the age of seventeen she took the Regents examination, being one of three that passed, out of a class of more than one hundred. She was married to Jefferson J. Chase, June 13, 1866, at Groton, N. Y., by Bishop Ames. They first lived on a farm near Bath, N. Y., then came west to Zanesville, O., where they entered into business, then to Richmond, Ind., then to Illinois, where they have lived on a farm near Mason for nearly twenty-two years. The past two years they have lived a retired life in Effingham. To this union were born eight children, two, Andrew H., who died at the age of four months, and Governor L., who died at the age of nineteen years, having preceded her in answer to the final call.

She leaves to mourn her departure her husband, one brother, J. W. Chase, of Germantown, Ind.; one sister, Marietta Strong, of Groton, N. Y.; six children, Mrs. Jeffettie Stout, of Richmond, Ind., who has been nursing her mother for the past two years; S. Wesley, of Altamont; Harry O., of Richmond; Homer B., of Mason; Luna V. Spragg, of Edgegood; and Claudius H. J. of this city. There are eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter and numerous friends.

Mrs. Chase was a sufferer for years seldom being able to enter into society. She had been a member of the Home Department of Sunday School and a Bible student for years. She was a member of the M. E. church, being baptized and received into the church by Dr. J. G. Harmon since she moved to Effingham. She died with a firm faith in the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Farewell, dear mother, fare thee well;
To write this makes my bosom swell.
Thou tarried long on earth, 'tis true,
But we drop tears with this adieu.
We know you dwell with Jesus, high,
Far above the bright blue sky,
Where angels sing their sweetest lays,
And will through everlasting days.

The friends you left behind, in bloom,
Will gather 'round your sacred tomb,
They'll lave that sacred dust with tears,
Sigh o'er your grave for many years,
And when they leave they're leave with prayer
That they may come where now you are;
Aye, make the Heavenly arches ring
Beneath the throne of God, your King.

Your body sleeps beneath the sod,
Your soul, we know, is with your God;
Aye, yes, and with your children, too,
Whom you long since bade warm adieu,
And, now, farewell!! We wipe our eyes.
And try hard to suppress our sighs;
Your children and grandchildren, too,
All join us in this warm adieu.
