Russell Elias Slater, retired Deputy Police Chief of Kentwood, passed away on October 15, 2013 at age 82. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Janice L. Slater, his sons Russell (Lori) Slater, Donald (Sue) Slater and daughter Laurie (Jerry) Boomers, ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Royce T. Slater, his brother Elmo Slater and his sisters, Edith Marihugh and Thelma Shears. Russell was proud of his service to his country and community. He was a veteran of the Korean War, served with the city of Kentwood as a volunteer fireman and part-time school bus driver, served as a police officer with the Kent Co. sheriff for 12 years and served the city of Kentwood Police for 26 years. He was one of the original three officers who were hired when Kentwood became a city. He was also a parishioner at Calvary Baptist Church and later Ada Bible Church. A Funeral service with military honors, will be held 11:00 AM, Monday, October 21, 2013 at the Ada Bible Church, 8899 Cascade Rd. SE. Interment at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 12 Noon - 3 PM at the Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home and 10 AM until the time of the service at the church, Monday. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Parkinson's Foundation or Ada Bible Church. Thank you for keeping Russell's family in your thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
