Mitchell Martin "Mitch" Cook, age 50, of Stevensville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at his childhood home in Wilmington, North Carolina. Mitch was born February 13, 1963 in Wilmington, the son of the late Thomas R. Cook.
Mitch's love for the game of baseball was evident. He graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, North Carolina where he helped lead the team to a State Baseball Championship in 1981 as a left-handed batter and right-handed pitcher. Upon graduation he was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 1981 amateur draft. In 1983, Mitch was traded to the New York Mets. He was named the league's All-Star right-handed pitcher and nominated for pitcher of the year. He was then traded by the New York Mets in 1984 to the Houston Astros. In 1988, he returned to the Mets chain.
Most recently, Mitch was a baseball Pitching Coach at Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland. He also had worked as a Professional Golf Pro at Queenstown Harbor Golf Links in Queenstown, Maryland.
Mitch is survived by his mother, Faye Cook of Wilmington, NC; wife, soul-mate and best friend, Megan Cook, of Stevensville, MD; proud father to his daughter, Morgan T. Cook; and brother, T. Ross Cook all of Wilmington, NC; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and many close relatives and friends.
A Mass service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Annapolis, Maryland, next week. A memorial service will be held at Andrews Mortuary, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at a later date.
