www.ellisisland.org has the following two entries for Johann Gschwend. The 1909 immigration date is the correct Johann Gschwend individual. I have added the other Johann Gschwend because I believe him to be a relation to the Johann who immigrated to America in 1909. Images of the original ship manifests are available to view for free. William was from St. Gallen, Switzerland. I have spent some time in St. Gallen and I would like to let any relatives know that your ancestor came from a very beautiful town in a peaceful part of the world.

On his signed WWI Draft Registration Card (Local Board, Humboldt County, CA, Serial Number 1545, Order Number 4995, and dated Sept. 12, 1918), Johann Wilhelm Gschwend, naturalized citizen of America, occupation blacksmith at Pacific Lumber Company, Scotia, CA, lists Mary Gschwend as his nearest relative; her address was Scott Creek, Scotia, CA. On the WWI Registrar's Report (4-2-4. C , which is page 2 appearing along with his Draft Regiratration Card), his height was listed as medium and build was slender; he had brown eyes and dark hair.

There is another William Gschwend individual (b. 1920 and d. 1927, Find A Grave Memorial # 75864233), a boy with a middle initial of M., born to mother's maiden name of Bolt, on August 27, 1920 in Humboldt, CA. William M. Gschwend is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Arcata, Humboldt County, CA, with a beautiful headstone. This boy possibly was the son or grandson of William Gschwend of this memorial. Arcata is about 15 minutes by car north of Eureka.

A will for Johann Wilhelm Gschwend, dated November 7, 1923, is on file at the Humboldt County Historical Society, 703 8th Street, Eureka, CA 95502.

There are many Gschwend individuals listed in the census and birth records in Mendocino County, CA, which is the county directly to the south from Humboldt County, CA. They appear to have been instrumental in establishing businesses and structure for several towns in Mendocino County. It is my best opinion that William was indeed related to the Gschwend individuals from Mendocino County.
