Mr. Denton, a native of Pitt County, serviced in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a graduate of N.C. State University and received his master's degree from East Carolina University.
Mr. Denton taught in the Pitt County school system for 33 years with most of his service as a math teacher at Ayden-Grifton High School.
Surviving: his wife, Margaret Oakley Denton; daughters, Molly Denton Murphy of Snow Hill and Edna Denton Hodges of Washington, N.C.; son Grigg Thomas Denton of Greenville; stepdaughters, Georgina Fair of Grifton, Melanie Hardee, Lisa Hardee and Jaime Hardee, all of Greenville, mother, Edna Blanchard Denton; brother, Edgar A. Denton of Greenville; one grandchild; three step-grandchildren.
