Joe Hanna Jr.

A graveside service will be held April 19 for Joe Olvin Hanna Jr., of Salem, formerly of Springfield, who died April 14 of prostate cancer. He was 82.

Hanna was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Gainesville, Texas, to Joe and Lillie Martin Hanna. He married Gracie "Bea" Hunt in Mena, Ark., on Sept. 143, 1945.

He grew up during the Depression in East Texas. He also lived in Arkansas and California before moving to Springfield in 1954. He moved to Lakeside in 1988 and settled in Salem in 2003.

He joined the Army in September 1941 and witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor from Scofield Barracks in Honolulu. He remained in the South Pacific before volunteering for flight school in 1944. He later served as a field hospital administrator in England until his discharge in 1945.

He worked for Weyerhaeuser in Springfield as a timber faller for 24 years until his retirement.

He enjoyed fishing and watching the Atlanta Braves. He especially enjoyed his family who will remember him as a tough, quiet, gentle, loving man.

Survivors include his wife, three sons, George Owens of Bend, Joe Hanna of Eugene, and Gordon Hanna of Salem; two daughters, Jean McKinney of Astoria and GR Castillo of Salem; three brothers, Jim, Jerry, and Butch, all of Waldron, Ark.; four sisters, Betty Byword of Boles, Ark., Billie Cox of Fort Smith, Ark., Joyce Byword of Waldron and Peggy Collins of Paragould, Ark.; nine grand-children; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 9a.m. to 10:30a.m. Monday at Springfield Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home. Monday's service will be held at 11a.m. at Springfield Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mid-Willamette Valley Hospice, the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
