Stephen Douglas Holmes

Stephen Douglas Holmes, 63, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Friday, May 3, 2013, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

A graveside service is at 4 p.m. today, Monday, at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Joseph Phipps officiating, with burial to follow.

No visitation is planned.

A memorial fund has been established. Memorials and cards may be sent to 22665 Kittyhawk Ave., Macon, Mo., 63552.

Behner Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Holmes was born Aug. 20, 1949, in Fairfield, the son of George Merlin and Norma Teller Holmes. He married Debra Joann WISDOM June 27, 1973, in Fairfield.

He graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1967, where he played basketball and was in the band.

He continued his education at Southeast Iowa Community College and Northeast Missouri State (now Truman State) in Kirksville, Mo.

He received the God and Country Award from Boy Scouts and was master counselor of DeMolay.

He started his 39-year career with the phone company by cleaning phone booths.

He loved being an urban farmer and he enjoyed his horses and dogs.

He continued playing basketball in different leagues.

He lived in the Jefferson City area since 1974.

He was a member of the IBEW Union.

Survivors include his, wife Debra Holmes of Jefferson City; one son, Trenton J. Holmes of Jefferson, City; his mother, Norma Holmes of Fairfield; and one sister Mary Reed of Fairfield.

He was preceded in death by his father, George Holmes and his grandparents.
