LAKE PLACID— Grace Mae Lawrence Chabbott, 91, of Lake Placid, died Thursday, July 9, 2009.

Born October 20, 1917 at home, she was the daughter of Harrison and May Belle Lawrence.

She graduated from Lake Placid High School, met and married Francis Chabbott in 1936, and discovered “love at first sight.”

She worked for many years as a switchboard operator at the Lake Placid Club and as an operator for ABC Sports during the 1980 Olympics. Her last job was at the Robo Mini-mart until she was 79.

Grace was a faithful member of St. Eustace for many years, where she served as usher and hosted many much-enjoyed coffee hours. For several years she and her husband, Francis, traveled with their horses on the harness racing circuit around the Tri-state area.

She started cross-country skiing in her 70s and was given a canoe for her 80th birthday. She also loved to garden and was a wonderful cook and baker.

Grace was the mother of five children: Robert Chabbott of Lake Placid; Dede (Helen) DeRoth of Duluth, Ga.; Karen Yorlano of Middlesex, N.J.; Donna Chabbott of Williamston, S.C. and Holly Chabbott of Jay. She was the grandmother of seven and great-grandmother of 10.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 17 at St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid. Burial will follow. Rev. Brock Baker will officiate.

The family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to High Peaks Hospice, P.O. Box 840, Saranac Lake, NY 12983 in her memory.

The Clark Funeral Home in Lake Placid is in charge of arrangements.
