Soviet General. He joined the Red Army in 1932 and became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1937. He served on the Western Belarus and Karelian Fronts as a tank commander during the Soviet-Finnish War from 1939 to 1940. Shortly after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 he was placed in charge of a Russian tank battalion. The following year he was promoted to commander of the 91st tank brigade. During the Second World War he saw action on the Western, Southern, Southwestern, Stalingrad, Bryansk, Central and Voronezh Fronts. He was a major participant in the battles of Minsk, Moscow, Kursk and Stalingrad. In January 1944 he was awarded the rank of "Hero of the Soviet Union" for his numerous battlefield successes. Following the war he held several high ranking military commands including commander in chief of Soviet forces in Germany, commander of the Kiev Military District and Deputy Minister of Defense. He was awarded the rank of "Marshal of the Soviet Union" in April 1967 and served as commander in chief of the Warsaw Pact from 1967 to 1976. He was a four time recepient of the "Order of Lenin," a four time recipient of the "Order of the Red Banner," a two time recipient of the "Gold Star" and a recipient of the "Red Star."
