She was the daughter of Joseph Morrison and Susan Jane Shirk DeHaas. Her parents had a farm in Marsh Creek. She had a pet deer named Buck when she was young. She walked to the one room schoolhouse that is now used as a corn crib along the creek. She married Jacob C. Bechdel II in Howard. Their children were J. Frank, Freda Collins, Roxy Earon, Lula Clark, Charlotte Heverly, Fred, Joseph and Dorothy Bechdel.


OBITUARY:

Beech Creek - Mrs. Lydia Jane Bechdel, 77, wife of Jacob C. Bechdel, died at 1:30 a.m. this morning at her home here. She suffered a stroke last Thursday and never regained consciousness. She was the former Lydia DeHaas, daughter of the late Susan and Joseph DeHaas, and was a direct descendant of the late Major General John Philip DeHaas, who was given a land grant in the vicinity for his services in the Revolutionary War. She was a life long resident of the Beech Creek-Blanchard area. She and her husband farmed in this vicinity until 1924 when they retired and moved to their present home in this place. Mrs. Bechdel was a Gold Star mother, a member of the local American Legion and Blanchard Church of Christ. Her son, Joseph R. Bechdel, was killed in the first World War a day before the Armistice was signed. Joseph was 23 on November 9th, and he was killed on the following day. Besides her husband, she is survived by five daughters: Mrs. W. Harold Clark and Mrs. Claude H. Bechdel, this place; Mrs. Clarence Earon of Altoona; Mrs. Wae M. Collins, Ann Arbor, Mich.; Mrs. Clyde Heverly, of Blanchard; one son, J. Frank, this place; one brother, Morton C. DeHaas, and a sister, Mrs. Hershey Robb, both of this place; 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren." Her funeral announcement reads: "Funeral services for Mrs. Lydia Jane Bechdel, 77, wife of Jacob C. Bechdel, Beech Creek, who died at 1:30 a.m. Nov. 20, 1950, at her home as a result of a stroke suffered last Thursday, will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Bechdel Funeral Home, Beech Creek. The Rev. Frank M. Baim will officiate. Burial is to be made in the Christian Cemetery at Blanchard. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. this evening. Delbert D. Helt, Funeral Director."
