Charles said at the time of his marriage to his fourth wife Mary that he had been married three time before. He lived in Burlington at the time of this marriage and was working as a carpenter. He also worked in the coal mines of Van Buren.

Ottumwa Daily Courier
July 25, 1903

This paper stated that plaintiff Julia McCrady wanted a divorce from Charles. She stated that they were married on November 24, 1878 at Laclede, Mo. Then shortly after their marriage disregarding his marriage vows, he was guilty of cruel and inhuman treatment and in later years had become a habitual drunkard.

The Aug 19th paper reported that Charles had defaulted on the case and so Julia would have to prove her charges.

* Name was seen as both McCrady and McCready in records. Most often McCrady. His father's military record is just one example.
His father William was an uncle and Charles was my step-great grandfather. I have seen many, many family records. Do not know who planned the spelling on the stone. Click on link for his wife Mary Alice McCrady and you will see her death certificate with the McCrady spelling on it.
