Nov 12, 1957 - Humboldt Independent - Solomon Eugene Rhodes was the son of S.P. Rhodes and Anna Jane Muschaw Rhodes. He was born on December 21, 1856, in Jefferson County, Iowa, and passed away at the Moen Nursing Home in Humboldt, Iowa, on October 31, 1957, at the age of 100 years, 10 months, and 10 days.
Mr. Rhodes was married in Rutland, Iowa to Mrs. Jennie Allen. His active life was spent in Rutland, Iowa as a drayman. He began his work in the early days with a horse drawn wagon, and continued on into the motor driven era. His favorite hobby was whittling, especially wooden chains. He could whittle a chain continuous links from a single piece of wood, and many of his chains were several feet in length.
Mr. Rhodes remained in Rutland until his health began to fail, and about 20 years ago came to Humboldt to make his home at the Moen Nursing Home. Here he received good care and enjoyed the remaining years of his long life. Mr. Rhodes was the last of his family and has no surviving relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, who passed away in 1926; three sisters: Lydia, Rosetta, and Sarah; and one brother, Harry.
