Charles was the son of Charles and Maria Hartford Sholes of New York with siblings: Pluto born in Canada (1846) and Mary born in Ohio (1847). His grandmother was Cynthia Sholes (1790), Charles Sr.'s mother, born in New York. In 1850, the family was in Ontario County, New York. In 1860, Charles was in a "House of Refuge" in Monroe County, New York, but in 1870, he was back with his mother in Ontario County, New York, and in 1880, he was again in Monroe County, New York. Charles married Victoria Hartford, his first cousin, about 1882 and they had Charlottie Bell (1884), Valentine, and Almyra Adeline (1891). They probably divorced sometime between 1891 and 1894. Charles immigrated as a young child about 1850.
