Lorenzo was the son of John Shepardson and Parmelia Steadman. His Massachusetts death record lists his parents as John and Lestina Shepardson. This appears to be an error; Lorenzo was married to Lestina Edwards Separdson at the time of his death.

Lorenzo's birthdate is listed as December 3 in "The Shepardson Family: A Record of the Line of Samuel Shepardson, Guilford, Vermont" (1907) Frances Wayland Shepardson, and as December 31 in some transcripts of Vermont birth records.

In March, 1854, Lorenzo married Roxana Burrows. They had one son. In March 1858, Lorenzo was granted a divorce for desertion (Vermont Phœnix [Brattleboro, Vt.] March 6, 1858). In June of the same year, he married Mrs. Lestina Edwards Lamb.

Lorenzo served as a Private in Company H, 16th Vermont Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in October 23, 1862, and was discharged a few months later due to disability. Various sources indicate he served from 1 to 4 months.
