JACKSONVILLE - Sarah Catherine Aman, 77, of Jacksonville, died peacefully Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, at Kitty Askins Hospice House in Goldsboro after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17 at Jones Funeral Home, Jacksonville Chapel with Elder D.B. Stokes officiating. Burial will follow at Onslow Memorial Park.
The daughter of Lemuel Gillette Aman Sr. and Bernice Higgins Aman, Catherine was born Feb. 28, 1936, at her former home on what is now Camp Lejeune Marine Base. She was a long time member of New Bay Primitive Baptist Church, and a published author of three poetry books. She graduated from White Oak High School in 1954; East Carolina University in 1958; and earned her Masters degree in 1971 at East Carolina. She was a teacher, advisor and guidance counselor at White Oak High School for 38 years, from 1969 through 2007. Prior to that she began her career in 1958, with the N.C. Agricultural Extension Service in Chowan County and then Brunswick County.
She was a dedicated servant to many organizations, including Alpha Delta Kappa; Order of the Eastern Star; Onslow County Parks and Recreation Commission; Onslow Historical Society; Onslow County Museum Foundation; Coastal Enterprises of Jacksonville; and the Former Landowners of Camp Lejeune Marine Base. She often was a board member and officer to several organizations at the same time.
Through her personal life, professional career, and service to her community, she was an inspiration and guiding light to everyone who had the privilege of knowing or working with her, and especially to the thousands of students who passed through the doors of her school. She dearly loved her family, and had a passion for reading and writing her poetry.
She was predeceased by her parents; a brother, Lemuel G. Aman Jr.; and nephews, L.G. Aman III and Rodney D. Aman.
She is survived by a sister-in-law, Ann Godwin Aman of Holly Ridge; a sister, Effie Lee Aman Cherry and her husband, Frank of Hendersonville, Tenn.; and a brother, David Manley Aman and his wife, Billie Wade of Easley, S.C. Also surviving are nieces, Kim Bradshaw, daughter of Lemuel and Ann Aman Jr.; Suzanne Cravens and Emily Byrd, daughters of Effie Lee and Frank Cherry; and nephews, Charles D. Aman; Edward J. Aman; and Christopher T. Aman, sons of David and Billie Aman.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
