Marilyn Jane Olson, 82, of Bowman North Dakota died Saturday morning, October 12, 2013, in Spearfish, South Dakota after a brief struggle with cancer. Funeral services are scheduled for Monday afternoon, October 21, 2013 at 2:00 pm at Bowman Lutheran Church, Bowman, North Dakota. The Reverend Charles Swanson will officiate with burial to follow the service in the Bowman Cemetery, Bowman, North Dakota. Marilyn Jane Latham was born February 5, 1931 in the Maternity Home in Camp Crook, Harding County, South Dakota, the daughter of Frank and Esther (Bickerdyke) Latham. She was reared in Harding County, South Dakota at the Latham family ranch on the Little Missouri River, North of Camp Crook. Marilyn had two brothers Erwin Latham and Neil Latham. Marilyn completed elementary school at the Bullock School near the Latham family ranch before attending and graduating from high school in Buffalo, South Dakota. Marilyn graduated as class valedictorian in 1949. Marilyn married John R Olson on May 25, 1949 at the K/O Ranch. Marilyn and John R had four children, David Olson, Franki Parson, Todd Olson, and Shelley Iverson. Marilyn and John R lived on the K/O Ranch in Harding County, South Dakota until 1987. Marilyn was an active member of Bowman Lutheran Church, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and participated in Circle groups. Marilyn was a 40 year cancer survivor. After she had mended from a radical mastectomy, she was committed to supporting other women in this journey by becoming a "Reach to Recovery" volunteer. She was so successful with her volunteer work that the American Cancer Society offered her a job organizing volunteers across North Dakota. Marilyn grew tired of the grueling travel required as part of the Cancer Society job, so she decided to launch her insurance business. This was at a time in life when most folks are choosing to retire. Marilyn was devoted and thoroughly enjoyed serving her clients. Marilyn loved the Bowman community, her family (immediate and extended), and her many friends. She enjoyed her Friday afternoon card group and her coffee group. She was a very independent and generous woman. Marilyn volunteered at the Sunset Home in Bowman and was often times the first person to arrive with a cake or bars when others were having difficulty. Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband (John R), her parents and brothers. Survivors include: two sons and one daughter-in-law, David Olson, Nampa, ID and Todd (Lorri) Olson, Bozeman, MT; two daughters and sons-in-law, Franki (Dean) Parson, Fort Collins, CO and Shelley (Jon) Iverson, Spearfish, SD; eight grandchildren; Tobi (Aaron) Bockman, Hillary (Brad) Johns-Parson, Alec Parson, Sam Olson, Sydney Olson, Elijah Iverson, Grace Iverson, and Peter Iverson; two great grandchildren: Audrie and Mattie Bockman.
