Samuel Morton Brock, Jr., 88, of Westover, WV, died Oct 13, 2013 in North Chesterfield, VA, where he was residing with his daughter and her husband.

The son of the late Samuel and Delia Brock, Sam was born on April 27, 1925, in Eccles, WV. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, he joined the US Navy and served on a LST ship. Following a two year tour of duty, he attended West Virginia University, joined the ROTC, and obtained a B.S. degree in Geology. After graduation, Sam entered the US Army Reserves and was employed at the WV Road Commission. After leaving the WV Road Commission, he worked until his retirement as a geologist for the WV Geological Survey. He also retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in US Army Reserves after thirty years of service.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sara Elizabeth (Betty); his son Samuel M. Brock III and wife Marsha; and his daughter Elizabeth Ann Moats and husband Thomas. Sam was blessed with four grandchildren. They are Molly White and husband Patrick; Adam Brock and wife Emma; and Hannah Moats and Jesse Moats. Sam also had four great-grandchildren: Ezekiel and Phoebe White, Bella Gamboa, and Abigail Johnson. Also surviving are his sister Rose Norman of Charlotte, NC; two sisters-in-laws: Margaret (Peggy) Fleming and husband Herbert; and Betty Benson. His family also includes seven nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his sister Virginia Teague; his sister-in-law Jean Benson; and his brother-in-law George Benson.

Sam was an avid sports fan all of his life and, during his retirement, he greatly enjoyed bowling every week with his friends. He was an active member of the Westover United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees, taught Sunday School for thirty years, contributed to a host of charitable organizations, and cared for elderly church members; but most of all, Sam was a true and faithful servant of God.

Family and friends may call at the Westover United Methodist Church, 28 North Street from 5-8 pm Wednesday and on Thursday from 10:00am until the 11:00am funeral service with Pastors Kevin Cain and Rose McCartney officiating.
