James K. Polk DENNIS was the son of James and Sarah DENNIS and was born in Cleves, [Hamilton County,] Ohio, December 7, 1846, and was the eldest of four children. He was married to Harriett Emaline VEST June 14, 1870. To this union nine children were born, five of whom with the widow, survive, namely: James DENNIS, Linton; Mrs. Ida STAGGS, Terre Haute; Mrs. Elizabeth GILKERSON, Danville, Illinois, and Mrs. Jennie HOLMES and Dugger DENNIS, of Bloomfield. Mrs. Bertha DENNINGHOWER and three infants preceded their father to the better land. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Eliza HOGGENS, Cincinnati, Ohio, and two brothers, Gabe DENNIS and Millard DENNIS, both residing in Cincinnati, Ohio. When a very young man he came from Ohio to Indiana, and it was here that he found his devoted companion, and they have made their home in and near Bloomfield ever since. He united with the Christian Church at Newberry about the year 1872. He was a great reader of the bible, and enjoyed it; and for the past few years has lived a devoted Christian life. He did not get to attend services of his church as was his great desire on account of the loss of his hearing some years ago. He was a good husband, a kind and loving father; all his neighbors were his friends; in fact, all who knew him. None knew him but to love him. None named him but to praise him. He so often spoke of his appreciation of the acts of kindness bestowed upon him by his many friends. Mr. DENNIS had been a farmer and a teamster, and was never known to shirk from duty; always so willing to do his part, and more than he was able to do at times. He dearly loved his family, and was never tired of doing for them. They were a happy family together. His vacant chair can never be filled. His home was always open to strangers, and was a pleasant place to visit. He always had a kind word for all who called upon him. He had been in declining health for some time. All his children and one brother, Millard DENNIS, were at his bedside when he left this earth for his heavenly home. He passed away Friday afternoon, April 30, 1920, at the age of seventy-four years, four months and twenty-three days. The funeral services were conducted at the home Sunday afternoon at 3:30, Rev. E. E. ALDRICH and Rev. O. E. KELLER, officiating. The body was lovingly and tenderly laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery, there to await the judgment day.
