Hazel Merrill, Actor's Mother, Dies in Maine

Mrs. Hazel A. Merrill, '88, of I Devonshire St., Portland, Maine, a former Hartford-area teacher and the mother of actor Gary Merrill, died Thursday in a Portland nursing home.

Born in Westbrook, Maine, she lived in the Hartford area 25 years before moving to Portland In 1940.

She was a music teacher in Windsor and taught in several elementary schools in the Hart ford area.

She was a member of State Street Church In Portland.

Besides her son, Gary of St Petersburg, Fla., she leaves an other son, Jerry M. Merrill of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and five grandchildren.

A private funeral will be Saturday with the Rev. W. Harper Welch of the State Street Church officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Maine Charitable Mechanics Association, 519 Congress St., Portland, or to the Portland Symphony.
