Dwight H. "Paddlefoot" Sloan was born on April 7, 1914 to Samuel Allison Sloan and Julia Francis Porter in Rudy, Crawford Co, AR. He was the youngest of eight children. "Paddle", as he was known, was an All-American football player at the University of Arkansas who appeared in The Shrine East-West All Star game his senior year. He was drafted by the Chicago Cardinals of the National Football League. He was traded to the Detroit Lions where he played until WWII. Paddle married Geraldine Ferrar Moss of Little Rock, AR in 1940.

Lt. Col. Dwight Sloan, U.S. Army (Ret.) died March 18, 1998 at the age of 83. He was preceded in death by his siblings: Della Kenner, Edward Sloan, Eula West, Gladys Pope, Ray Sloan, Earl Sloan, and Mary Crabtree. He is survived by his loving family: wife, Jerry; daughter, Nancy Wentzel of San Antonio; son David and wife Cynthia of Austin, TX; daughter Julie Sullivan and husband Mark of San Antonio; grandchildren Tracy, Terry, Christina, Jessica, Shannon, and Bryan; and special friend Nancy Johnson of Arlington, TX. Also great-grandsons Tucker and Turner.

Memorial services were held Monday, March 23 1998, 11:15 am at the Army Residence Community Auditorium, 7400 Crestway, San Antonio, TX 78239. Graveside services were at 1:45 pm at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arkansas Razorback Foundation, 91 N. Razorback Rd, Fayetteville, AR 72701 or your favorite charity. Funeral arrangements by Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy, San Antonio, TX.
