William enlisted as a Private in the Eighth Vermont Regiment, Company H. on January 17, 1862. His obituary in the New York Times on November 6, 1905, states that "he was wounded seven times at Raceland, La., when the train on which his company was moving south was ambushed. He was discharged in 1868 with the rank of Brevet major.

William was appointed Inspector in the Customs Service in New York in 1879, and was promoted to Deputy Surveyor in 1901.
