James served with the 2nd US Sharpshooters during the Civil War. he mustered in to Company E on September 30, 1862, and discharged for disability February 2, 1863.
James married Mary Ann Wales on May 31, 1868. They had two children

After Mary Ann's death, James married Adeline V. Carpenter on April 30, 1882
James' obituary in the Vermont Phoenix states that he was paralyzed from the head down for many years, "... but his general health had been good, his mind clear, his disposition sunny and cheerful." His paralysis was attributed to the injury in 1863 which resulted in his discharge from the Sharpshooters. The obituary also notes that "He was a good neighbor and a true friend who will be much missed in the community."
